Who we are-
We are a Mother / Daughter team, Diane and Sarah, enjoying the many facets of dog sports and the adventures along the way.
We appreciate the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (NSDTR) as a breed and the traits specific to the breed and hope to help preserve
the Toller by participating in the field, conformation, and obedience events. We are members in good standing of NSDTR - US, NSDTR - CAN,
and North American Hunting Retriever Association (NAHRA). Our dogs are an important part of our lives and it is our responsibility to provide a
safe and stimulating environment to challenge all of us physically, mentally, and joyfully.
Blue Sky Tollers
- "Blue Sky" comes from opportunity where "Blue Sky" is untapped potential - in this case, unlimited potential - the sky is the limit.
These dogs are amazing and their capability is only limited by their human partners.
How we got started -
I saw my first Toller in about 1979 at a dog show in British Columbia on Vancouver Island while I was showing a Bernese
Mountain Dog. I remember seeing the moderate sized red dog with white markings was intrigued first by their appearance,
and then by the great name of the breed. I suspect that that was my first sighting of our future breeder, Alison Strang - Westerlea Kennels.
Over the years, there would be random sightings of Tollers, at the beaches in British Columbia and then locally in Washington.
I had always been involved in Dog Shows from the time I was first introduce by showing the neighbor's St Bernard "Molly O'Leary",
to joining Peninsula Dog Fanciers' Club and becoming an active member helping to put on AKC Conformation and Obedience Shows
and then expanding into Agility and Responsible Dog Ownership Day.
Sarah, has been part of the local dog community since before she was born. She learn about dog shows as a junior Club
member and working various committees. Her experience growing up was with Australian Shepherds and then her own dog,
"Misty", a Golden Retriever , was her introduction into obedience. Sarah was interested in her own dog after graduating college.
As she researched the many breeds, the Toller rose to the top of the list. Our Toller owned friends had been inviting us to the
"BC Toller Walk" for a couple of years. We finally made the date in 2008 and trekked to Burnaby BC for the event. We met
approximately 60 Tollers of all ages and their people. At this time, we met Alison Strang of Westerlea Kennels and not only were
we sold on the breed, but the opportunity to have a puppy from the Westerlea Kennel was like all of the stars aligning.
We were a bit tough to deal with as both Sarah and I were interested in pups. The was the beginning of something we could
do together, yet in separate households. We were able to convince Alison that she would not be disappointed in us a Toller
owners.
From the breeding of AKC/CKC Westerlea The Nelson Touch, JH and Ducker's Scotia Piper, we have "the Boys" - Westerlea
Nothin' But Blue Sky "Sunny" and Westerlea Tailor Made Blue Sky "Taylor".
